Pabst Blue Ribbon rss

Confessions of a boy who likes that ever so cheap and delicious beer.

May 24, 2006

Alcohol: Usually a good drink but it can cause problems with abuse.

Don't Buy Coors: Coors is good beer but terrible politics.

Pabst Blue Ribbon

I'm not a particularly heavy drinker, but I sure like my Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. It is often difficult to find around these parts, but it is such a great beer. Somehow I prefer it to other beers as it strikes a balance between being smooth and light, yet not as bitter as other beers such as Budwiser or Labbats. It's a beer for the beer drinker who doesn't like the bitter after taste, but wants something light and different from the taste of Corona. I like drinking Corona a lot, but it can grow tiresome after a while.

Some people mock my working class tastes when it comes to beer. Pabst is often the cheapest type of beer on the menu and lately I've been getting it at Price Chopper for $6 for a 12-pack. It's the “blue ribbon beer” for blue-collar type of people. The cans proudly proclaim that it is union made from the finest agreements – something that is important to a very select group of people. It might also be my association with those kind of working class people who like their cheap beer.

As a little kid, my Grandfather always drank his Pabst when he was alive. Maybe I got my taste from him, or maybe I just respected what he stood for. He was a man who worked his whole life to build a good world for himself, fought in the Second World War and lived through the hardships of the Great Depression. A life long oil burner mechanic, he knew what to drink—a good simple beer.

I like drinking beer, particularly when I'm out camping or at a bar with some friends. My love of Pabst is a dirty little secret, and while after a while I tire of that drink, it's a good alternative to more expensive beer like Corona (nice light summer beer) and Sam Adams (my winter beer). At the price of Pabst, I can afford to drink a lot, though I avoid drinking too much due to the associated health concerns and unnecessary calories.
