Myself as an Individual

One of my favorite expressions is myself as an individual. Why do I say myself as an individual when one is always an individual when referring to himself? The reason is I want to stress that I am an individual.

An individual is a separate entity from everyone else. While he might be influenced by all the people around himself, he still is somebody separate at a root level. The individual is free to choose the people he associates with, and he can change the environment he lives in. The power to choose who you associate with and change your environment empowers you as an individual.

Couldn't I just refer to myself as myself? Why must I always be stressing my autonomy, my ability to choose and change my environment? I want everybody to know that I am free to do as I want to do and that nobody ultimately makes decisions for me. We might live in a world of complex laws and government, but we all have so much freedom to live our lives the way we want to.
