Political Ambitions

I always try to avoid answering this question as I know it will get me in trouble. Yet, people keep bullying me about this question. I'm working hard on many political campaigns and have lots of friends in good places, so I guess it's logical to ask what elected office I want to achieve.

My passion is state and local government. It just seems that the national government is too far away. It also seems that national politics have lost touch with the people, instead focusing on individual's personal weaknesses over the real hard question of the days. The federal government might only have the resources to address some problems, but we have to start locally.

I don't have ambitions to run for some high office. I've had my share of hard knocks over the years, and I fear what will happen when people look too carefully for me. I also don't think I can get that much done at that level, with the bigger questions taking over my real passions for the issues. I don't want to be the President or the Governor, I just want to make a difference in our world.

I also don't want to give up my entire life to the cause of politics. I want to have a family, have time to have a little fun outside of politics, spend a lot of time outdoors, own a little farm, and do all kinds of other great things. It's difficult to find balance, but I also don't want to give up on making the kind of changes that our society needs to badly.

Politics is an inheritantly egotistic business. People who run for office like hearing their names repeated over and over again in the news. There are some elected officials who genuinely care about the people they represent and others that have lost touch. Some politicians spend a lot of time working on the major issues facing their districts and others try to be general caretakers of government.

Yet, I want to do more. I want to take on issues of protecting open space and our environment. I want to see vibrant communities where people can live good lives. I want to make changes, not just for my own recognition but for everybody who desires to have a little better life. Things are pretty good in our country, but we should not be complacent, we should always be working for something just a little bit better.
