Progressives: An Uneasy Relationship

Blaming Corporations Not Government

One area that is disconcerning about progressives is their tendency to blame corporations and businesses for the ills of osciety, while ignoring the fialures of government. Yet, govenroment is ultimately soverign and should be held responsible for all of society's failures. Goverment needs to be creating laws, and enforcing laws that protect social welfare and society as a whole. When a corporation fails to serve the public interest, government should be reformed to create laws that make the corporation better serve the people.

Ultimately, we need to hold leaders accountable for their actions. We elect politicans to ultimately define all our fates. If we don't think business is doing right for the general public, then we need to tell our leaders and make them both step up enforcement and create laws that deal with our problems. A believe in progress has not to come from corporate reform, but by reform of the government governing us all.

Holding Individual Conduct Over Group Conduct

When is the last time a corporation went to jail for violating law? How come police are not patroling stores and reviewing logs to find out if companies are violating environmental laws or not paying their employees fairley? It is often difficult to hold groups accountable as power and action is distributed, but it should be the first thing attacked by liberals.

Look at some examples. It is wrong to go after people for burning trash, when we have big smokestacks from big corporations pouring out horrific chemicals. We simply have not done enough to combat air pollution, before attacking individual actions. Similiarly, we have enviromentalists who are fighting every little four-wheeler trail in the woods, claiming environmental descreation, while there is millions of acres each year being eaten up by suburban sprawl.

Failure to Blame Insitutions

Too many liberals are quick to the individual for his or her actions, and not for the societal infrastructure that forces choices. Yet, we know people make decisions inheritably under such insitutions that define lives. We must work to reform insitutions, and stop attacking people for questionable acts. When we see problems we need to look at the large social fameworks.

You see this in many realms. You see these mega-farms and confined animal feeding operations, and you know that mostly grew out of the need to survive and provide a decent standard of living. The result was a lower standard of living and lower commodity prices, but in part that was caused by price supports that artifically scaled up to larger insitutions. A similiar thing happens in our cities, where the criminal justice system creates criminals through oppressing the blacks that dominate our cities.

Liberal Tolerance

Progressive often view themselves are the proveyers of tolerance. They set a single standard for accepting people of other races, creeds, or sexual preferences, without respect to other peoples beliefs. While most people could agree that we should legally treat people of different races and sexual preferences the same, it seems that a personal level we should have our own standards.

You shouldn't have to like somebody if you don't like them. It's your choice, and if you can have your own beliefs. We should reinforce public choice, but also create insitutions that create protections for people who are different to us. We should allow gay marriage for those who want to get married, and give them full legal protections, but it doesn't mean as an individual you should have to accept it as morally valid.
