Farming the Hilltowns.

There was an interesting article in the Business section of the TU about beef cattle and farming in general in the hilltowns, and discussing Jackie Lendrum's farm in particular. It's kind of a brief story, but still interesting.

Now my question is do they have their cows clicker trained? If you don't know what I'm talking about see last week's archives.

Nassau County Enacts ATV Law.

It looks like that county from Long Island that has or used to have all those Republicans and now has Craig Johnson has also passed their truth in advertising ATVs statue that requires that ATV dealers prominently post big signs that say you can't ride quads anywhere really in Nassau County, and that they are dangerous, and that people who ride quads are Like Child Molesters (TM).

They are also requiring people sign statements that say just that. Then again that's Long Island for you, the other evil place outside of New York [emphasis added] City.

³The loss of Mark [Sattler] was, and still is, devastating to his family and his community,² Gonsalves said. ³I am committed to making sure that all riders of off-road vehicles are informed of the proper usage of these vehicles, and pedestrians are protected from the dangers these vehicles pose. This law is powerful and uncompromising, and I think it will save lives.²

And making people sign away their lives will do just that. I'm glad legislative people have such big egos.

Walkill's ATV Statue.

It looks like the Town of Wallkill downstate, is latest to propose a tough anti-ATV statue in their their, described as some as the toughest statue in the state with broadest language:

Following Montgomery's lead, the Town of Wallkill has proposed a new set of restrictions on ATV use on public and private property. Among other things, the law would restrict decibel levels, harassment of livestock, and kicking up sand, dirt or dust on neighbors' lands.

Vehicles affected might include all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, minibikes, go-karts, and snowmobiles.

Wallkill's proposal is the most restrictive local law for ATV users to date. It uses broad language — prohibited use includes "a manner that is disturbing and bothersome to adjoining property owners" — as a warning to all off-road enthusiasts to be more considerate.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out, both in the courts and in the legislature.
