I have been just too damn busy and have rarely touched the often troublesome computer lately. Doing stuff with my truck seems to take more and more time in my life, to say nothing about working countless hours, and planning to go back to college. Don't get me wrong, I love to write and there have been many interesting things to comment on, bujt the spring air beckons me to spend more time out in it's beauty.
The biggest stories to have kept an eye on lately was the reinstatement of the environmetnal protection fund (EPF) at $150 million, the creation of an ATV trail funding (finally!), and most recently the recommendation against people under 15 years of age from eating fish from the Adirondacks and Catskills (ouch!).
The first and the last are not surpising, but I'm glad for the first and not so happy about the last. The fishing ban seems a bit alarmist and a way for the state to get out of testing many of the smaller ponds in the Adirondacks, but it does remind us of the stark reality that we have had to live under for many years: the mercury from the west is screwing up our wild forests.
The news however forgets to note that most of the alarm is from recent testing, and if anything the mercury levels in ponds in the Adirondacks is much lower then a generation ago. There are also fewer trees dead in the Adirondacks from acid today then yesterday, though still those numbers are unacceptable.
