Individual No. 42

Beautiful Morning Out. This weekend was truly awsome if only a bit too short and too muddy. It's going to hit 80 °F today. Wow!

Spring is finally hear, and the grass is starting to turn green. There is however a very high fire risk, so if you need to burn something, put it off for a couple more days. You really don't want to damage a bunch of pasture or even worst, a barn this time of year.

Today is a session day in Albany, and there is a flurry of legislative activity all coming to a head in Albany. It should be an exciting week, following a nice slow and relaxing weekend. So enjoy it. P'Link

Scare Updates of Recent. Cowboy has not been as updated in recent weeks as it has been in the past for several reasons:

And so it goes. But expect more updates in the future as there is always something good to talk about. P'Link

New Angle to Rural Life - Northern Catskills Series (6/10/06)

My Geeky New Toy. Sometime around graduation I will be getting a new IBM ThinkPad R60 to do work on my photography and the blog. It will come with Windows Vista Home Basic, but most of the time I will be running Ubunutu Linux on this machine. I also will have Mac OS 9.0.4 on the machine (using SheepShaver) for running my favorite Mac OS programs.

I customized the machine heavily to suit my needs:

Basically this machine has lots of disk space and memory – things you want to have on a machine running multiple operating systems—two gigs memory and 120 MB hard drive. I wanted to have dual core as it’s relatively fast instead of the Celeron base model, and the 14.1 SXGA+ screen (resolution is more important then size for me). I skipped on the Windows Vista Home Premium version, as I didn’t need to subsidize Microsoft further and didn’t need the fancy graphics or bloat, when I would simply use the simple Windows Classic Theme to boot.

The great thing is I will be able to use it out in the woods, and connect to the Internet wherever there is a hot spot like by the Schoharie Public Library when I’m camping. It has a 9-cell battery that extends battery life for when I’m away from my pickup in the woods. It’s also one of the best built laptops out there in this price range, according to the reviews. I also got a rock solid Otter Box Laptop case to keep it safe in. That said I will be very careful about not dropping it and where it is kept in my pickup.

So I’m excited. The grand total was $1464 including $94 in tax and $165 for the Otterbox. May 17th is the ship date. And yes, maybe even if I am a cowboy who likes to play in the woods, I’m still a geek. P'Link
