Happy Fourth of July. A day early I should note, but it's not like this blog is updated on holidays or weekends these days. I think today's fodder is particularly provactive and worth a read.
At any rate, be careful with fireworks tonight and tommorow. Things are purty wet so it's unlikely you'll burn half a dozen acres, but a firecracker going off in your hand can do some real damage and hurt. Not to mention encourage our legislature to pass more stupid laws.
While I have to work on the forth during part of the day, I will be going down to the plaza to help pass out literature for Spitzer-Patterson 2006 and also helping out at the Bethlehem Neighboors for Peace Booth and finally going to the fireworks show. It will be great fun. P'Link
Too Many Blogs. It's really easy to add new blogs to the mysql/perl databases I created to power the new NYC, but it seems that I've overwhelmed things with categories that spread out my occassional fortrays into the many blogs. So I've decided to kill a few of the blogs or move them into new ones.
Burn never seemed to get off the start mark, in part because I could never quite figure out what should go there. Playing with matches might be fun, but I don't think there is enough direction to have a blog there Things on the burn barrel bill belong in the Hayseeds blog, along with stronger links to the Cowdung Bill Tracker that has recently gotten some new improvements, not all fully rolled out yet. Consumerism, pollution, and things on garbage will now go into Enviroman. Things on campfires and playing with matches will go into Outblog. It sounded like a good idea seperating things out, but in pratice there simply was not enough to sustain a blog.
Farm is merging into Enviroman. Farming is different from reflections on man and the environment, but it seems they have enough connections to make the merge make sense.
Outblog is staying around, though it will now be the home of my experiences bicycling and anything I experience non-mechanical with my pickup truck.
All this will only take 4 mysql statements so I can make the changes purty quickly. Next will be to look into why the month code is still causing random errors and putting the end of the month in the wrong month too often. P'Link
map.nycowboy.org: New Topo Mapping Software. A new feature coming to NYC is our integration with Google Maps and topographic maps. Just think—I mention a hike at Dutton Ridge or a bike right pass a farm in Beekman town and you'll be able to see either a high-quality USGS topo, USGS satelight, or Google Satelight, overlayed by Google Data.
Right now the tool is very primative. We only have access to USGS topos and no way of going to specific places. There are no connections to the blogs or other software yet. Those features will be implemented soon. Printing topos (probably the most important feature), is difficult as Google API doesn't really allow that.
It was working this morning, but I made some changes and broke it. Check back later. P'Link
