Hudson River Sweep at Hannacroix Preserve.

I signed up to pick up trash from the Hudson River on Earth Day at the Hannacroix Preserve. This event was arranged by Senenic Hudson, and I figured it would be a great networking event. And so it was, and I got to meet some of the nice people from the New Baltimore Land Conservancy, including WAMC Birder guy, Rich Guthrie.

Every year the New Baltimore Conservancy picks up trash from the preserve. It's amazing the garbage the Hudson River washed in on this couple of arces of shoreline. We picked up 3 or 4 tires and assorted car parts, lots of bottles and cans, and other assorted garbage.

Most disturbing was the styrofoam that was everywhere and in small pieces. Styrofoam floats well, and big pieces seem to get everywhere. It doesn't biodegrade very well nor break up beyond a certain size. It's a mess. We basically gave up on picking up styrofoam and going just for big trash.

In conclusion, it was an enjoyable experience despite the rain and drisel throughout the day. I got my Secinic Hudson hat, which simply isn't as nice as my cowboy hats. More important I got to meet more environmentalists and some fun projects to work on.
